Safety Tips for Slippery Conditions

November 12, 2008 by Barchinski

The other day I covered some basic tips to help keep those feet warm during the upcoming seasons most extreme weather conditions. But today i will explain some key tips one should take into consideration when challenging the rainy roads.

Lets start with our brakes, which ultimately can be our most important factor when riding a bike. If your brakes decide “Hey I’m tired, I’m going to just not work!” than yea your going to be in bad shape. Before you set out on your adventurous journey, take a minute to check your brakes. Wipe them down to make sure nothing is in the way from the pad hitting the wheel. If the weather is pretty wet it wouldn’t be a bad idea to stop every now and then and give those brakes a good rub with a towel.

Secondly, take in consideration what its like when your driving in your car during a rain storm, yeah exactly what i was thinking “miserable”. The windshield is always junked up with water and blowing leaves that it can become very difficult for one to drive. Well take those wet rain drops and slippery leaves and throw them directly in your path on your riding course. Challenging this can become but with a proper light setup and eye wear you’ll be sure to dodge any disaster.

After being able to see the road and figure out which direction you want to go it would also be a good idea to dodge some puddles. Yea it’s great trying to splash the nearby people walking on the sidewalk as you cruise through town, but on the same note it wouldn’t seem to cool if you wiped out in front of those people. So keep your eyes open and play smart.

Another great tip to keep in mind is avoiding slippery surfaces. One should know which elements of the street give no friction upon contact and those are the ones you wanna stay away from, because if not your daily ride can turn into disaster. Try to avoid the painted lines that are in the road because these can become very slippery along with anything that is metal: railroad tracks and manholes.

Enjoy and Best of luck to you on your next rainy day!
